Kids First Continues Strong

The Prineville/ Crook County Community Action Team obtained a grant from the Commission on Children and Families to help fund of the Kid’s First Program.

The common goal of the Kid’s First project is reaching out to areas where the incidence of poverty is substantial and build relationships with citizens before citizens find themselves in crisis situations. The Kid’s First Program links children and families through assessments by a Public Health Nurse, Law Enforcement, and Environmental Safety professionals.

The goal is being met by making relatively routine contacts in neighborhoods to offer children, and others if necessary, health examinations and referrals. Other services that have been offered are fire safety inspections, screening and treatment of minor illnesses, education about symptoms, treatments for family health issues, and immunizations. Products are also provided, such as emergency food and clothing, bike helmets, fire extinguishers and smoke detectors.

This team of community professionals goes door to door, knocking and talking, and is driven toward breaking barriers between families and necessary resources.

On January 28, 2004, the crew made their first site visit of the year at Ridgeview Commons in Prineville. What a success! Since the onset of the program in January, 2004, Hundreds children have been served, multiple neighborhoods have been visited, bicycle helmets have been utilized, at least 15 immunizations have been completed, toothbrushes, library packets, and fire safety information packets have been distributed.

In addition, many volunteers have shown their desire to make a difference in this community by volunteering their time and resources. To date, over 16 volunteers have participated in the program. Many thanks go out to those volunteers, whose efforts do not go unnoticed.
